Client Profile
Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust provides healthcare in hospital and the community to 258,000 people across Southport, Formby and West Lancashire.
Acute care is provided at Southport and Formby District General Hospital and Ormskirk District General Hospital. This includes adults’ and children’s accident and emergency services, intensive care and a range of medical and surgical specialities. Women’s and children’s services, including maternity, are provided at Ormskirk hospital.
The North West Regional Spinal Injuries Centre at Southport hospital provides specialist care for spinal patients from across the North West, North Wales and the Isle of Man.
The Challenge
The two main hospital sites are constructed using moderned building techniques to ensure they are as energy efficient as possible however, this in itself prevents mobile signal penetration. Additionally, both sites are located on undulating ground meaning that certain sections of some buildings are actually below what would normally be called ground level, also adding to the problem.
The main areas of concern were;
- Within the A&E dept. at Southport hospital.
- Within the Paediatrics Emergency dept. at Ormskirk hospital.
- Within the Senior Managers Head Quarters building.
Business needs
In a hospital environment, continuous and stable mobile connectivity is imperative for staff and patients alike, it can actually save lives.
At Southport and Ormskirk Hospital, they needed to improve mobile signal coverage in key areas of the existing buildings.
The Solution
Following a site survey, the Cel-Fi QUATRA mobile signal boosters were selected and installed to the 2 key areas of prime clinical importance. The Cel-Fi QUATRA is a scalable in-building mobile system for delivering high quality signal in venues up to 200,000 ft².
Within the Senior Management HQ, the smaller Cel- Fi Solo system was installed as the area of required coverage was considerably smaller.
These systems are cost-efficient and easy-to-deploy solutions which combines the best of active DAS and Smart Booster technologies which have been widely adopted by industry and networks around the world. These set new standards in Signal Boosting capabilities. Cel-Fi systems deliver a mobile signal which is up to significantly stronger than traditional analogue solutions.
Business Benefits
- The Cel-Fi solutions resolved the mobile coverage issues in the specified areas.
- Staff are confident that they are always contactable.
- Since the systems were fitted, the mobile signal has gone from zero to a steady four- five bars.
- Since initial installation, the customer is considering additional areas they wish to cover, this demonstrates the effectiveness of these solutions.
